Up-cycling a Few Cards

Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling In My Craft Room

Good day, fellow crafters. In today's eco-conscious world, the mantra of "reduce, reuse, recycle" has become more than just a slogan; it's a way of life. In the realm of crafting, particularly in the cozy confines of your craft room, embracing these principles can not only lead to stunning creations but also contribute to a sustainable future. Transforming waste materials into handmade cards embodies the essence of zero waste living, where every scrap finds new purpose and beauty. This approach not only minimizes environmental impact but also encourages creativity and resourcefulness. Trends in the crafting world reflect a growing appreciation for sustainable practices, with more artisans and hobbyists alike seeking ways to repurpose materials and reduce their carbon footprint. From upcycled paper scraps to reclaimed embellishments, the movement towards zero waste crafting is gaining momentum, offering both inspiration and opportunity for mindful makers. I hope you enjoy.

To create these cards I started by taking the beautiful packaging that a recent Altenew order had arrived in and cutting along the seams to lay it out flat. I really like the way that the bubble wrap makes an embossed-like effect. I then cut away the edges as well as removed the postage labels and any left over glue residue. Next I trimmed the packaging to get different sized panels from it including the four I have used for this project.

Using a Hero Arts rectangular nesting die set and my Gemini, I cut some various coordinating cardstock mats for each of my chosen panels. I then used some Bearly Arts liquid glue to adhere the background panel to the mat and then the composite to a white card base.

For the next step I chose the “Hello” sentiment from Altenew’s Timeless Sentiment die set, featured left. I really like how black and white interplay against each other so I choose to use that color combination to create the sentiments. I then adhered them together and then to the packaging with more liquid glue. With that, I called the card complete.
